A number of technical and engineering challenges were presented in the planning and design of this project for an events company in Johannesburg. They required an additional venue on the rooftop terrace of this building.
In order to retain an outdoor feel, it was necessary to have a structure with retractable roofs. The first challenge was how to cover such a large area, without the need for additional upright supports over such a long span.
By using I-beams and pillars on each side, the retractable roofs would be fitted in tandem between the I-beams. The sides would be completed with pivoting and stacking frameless glass doors, which allow the client to open up the space completely during an event.
On the opposite side of the fixed roof there is a smaller, more intimate balcony—an ideal coctail area, which we covered with two Italian-made retractable sail awnings. The sails can be completelyv retracted when they are not in use, but can be unfurled to stave of the hot highveld sun in summer, creating an ideal outdoor coctail lounge.
