The Indian Ocean laps gently along the white sandy beach. The azure blue Indian Ocean breeze tugs at the long bended leaves of the majestic palms, while the hot tropical midday sun beats down mercilessly from the blue sky above. How lucky can you be, to find yourself in this veritable paradise and call it ‘home’?
This client wanted something unique and functional yet, without breaking the bank. Two patios only metres away from the beach not only needed protection from the sun, but also needed to add a touch of character to the simple, yet contemporary design of the beautifully located home.
Ideally, the shade structures covering the two patios should not only be a visually pleasing addition, but should also provide functionality. A retractable roof would create a cool oasis against the merciless sun, but also providing the option of allowing more light into the adjacent living areas on cloudy days. Most importantly, it should be able to withstand the rigours of an environment that can be tempestuous at times, whilst being immune against the high salinity in the air, always found near the ocean.
The ideal solution is Pergola de Sol, a versatile, minimalist pergola, with manually retractable roof from SAHARA. By fitting gutters and Polycarb splash-plates on the sides, rainwater can be managed to keep the outdoor space fairly dry. Even though Pergola de Sol’s main function is sun protection, a waterproof canvass will cope just fine in conditions with light rain.
Additional character is lent to the space by adding a lower frontal beam and filling the space between the upper and lower frontal beams with a brightly coloured, laser-cut aluminium panel. We go one step further by adding mini LED lights to the lower frontal beam, and weatherproof LED strips inside the gutters, creating the perfect, romantic ambiance to those sultry tropical evenings.
And all of this is done with the budget in tact!

The client has the option of numerous extras, most of which can be added at a later stage. This Pergola de Sol has been fitted with gutters and splash plates on the side, to manage rain water from the retractable roof. Not only does it increase functionality - it also lends a more complete look to the pergola.
The facade is further enhance by adding an additional, lower frontal beam, and filling the space between the upper and lower frontal beams with a decorative laser cut aluminium screen in the design of the clients choice.
