This project involved the renovation of an existing dwelling to function as a 4-star guesthouse and conference centre in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Port Elizabeth. Its potential as a Guesthouse was recognised as the ability of every room to open out to private garden spaces. Challenges of the project included the clever inclusion of on-suite bathrooms for all rooms, the inclusion of two self-catering units in an existing garage and the careful separation of private guest spaces and service areas. The existing nature of the face brick house was retained while new additions were clearly articulated as white boxes. The focus of the Guesthouse was on the garden and the garden layout was carefully designed in consultation with a Landscaper. The aim of the garden design was to create functionality for parking and circulation while enhancing the garden’s beauty with pockets of space and planters. The Interior focus was on abstract vegetation innuendos and sumptuous furnishings.
