The result of a competitive bid, this national head office for South Africa's largest bank in Maputo, is located on a prominent riverside site with excellent visual exposure. Set on a palm lined esplanade, the office building presents a potent image in this vibrant African city which is currently growing at an astonishing rate. Observing established urban controls, the office block is created over four levels above screened structured parking and approached through a landscaped forecourt. Public interface spaces including reception, welcome centre and canteen are positioned linearly on the ground level opening to a planted courtyard. Honed Jerusalem sandstone clads the southern street facing facade in the form of two large scale framed curtain walls interceded by a punctuated feature panel. In the tradition of the Portuguese concrete craftsmanship prevalent in Maputo, the signature of this building is a slender off-shutter concrete trace which envelopes the composition and delivers a simple, yet impactful built outcome.
