Space: Residential
Design Style: Modern
Location: Johannesburg
The saying “location, location, location” rings very true with this project. Located on a hill in Bedfordview, this modern creation enjoys one of the best views of the Johannesburg cityscape. Its unique location allowed us to make the house almost become part of the landscape, allowing it to tower out above its surroundings (including neighbouring homes).
Let’s discover ‘House Sardinia’ high on a hill.
A decent dose of artificial lighting fixtures ensures this high-rise structure becomes a dazzling sight as soon as dusk strikes.
The intricate design takes full advantage of the splendid views of the site and fully allows the homeowners to feel as if there is no boundary between them and the outside.
Although the superb views flood indoors in various spaces, it was up to top-notch designs to ensure the interiors were as equally impressive as this modern house's location.
This unique site allowed us to design a sculptural element on the landscape. Set high up on a hill, the position allowed the house form to become a sort of rock feature protruding from the landscape.
Neutral- and earthy tones dominate the open-plan living room's colour palette, making the scattering of turquoises in select décor pieces become even more prominent.
As one of the most tried-and-tested building materials, wood can always be relied on to flaunt character, pattern, texture, and colour. Notice how it conjures up different looks and vibes for the various furnishings and accessories in the open-plan dining room and kitchen.
Thanks to a generous dose of windows and glass doors, that world-class view (and a rich amount of sunshine) comes flooding in on a daily basis.
Thanks to first-rate landscaping, the house seemingly grows out of the earth alongside lush plantation.
What good is a view such as this if you can’t enjoy it while socialising and relaxing al fresco?
Various levels (terraces, staircases, balconies) add to the layered look of the house, taking full advantage of its unique location.
A clever combination of materials and finishes ensure rich detail for the interiors, as seen here with the stainless steel staircase complementing the intricate detail of the stone-clad focal wall.
The subtle style continues into the more private spaces of the house, such as this bedroom with its clean approach to accessories, colours, and patterns.
It's simply a matter of sliding open generous doors and windows to make the fresh outdoors become part of the stylish interiors.
Eye-catching details were ensured for the interiors, resulting in an interesting mixing and mingling of styles. See how those doors (in an effective Asian style) complement the more modern vibe of the adjoining focal wall with floating shelves and credenza.
A stacked design, earthy tones, and lots of visual detail ensure a welcoming ambience for the front façade.
The fantastic view, which gets a stunning and starry upgrade at night, which was the main inspiration for this project's location.
