Roofers in East London

East London is a city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, located on the Indian Ocean coast. Founded in 1836, East London is about 1,000 km from Cape Town. It is known, among other elements, for its charming beaches and warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which puts it in strong contrast with Cape Town's much cooler Atlantic Ocean seaside setting.

A strong collection of vintage, historical buildings can be appreciated in East London. One of the most well-known is Gately House, which was built in 1878 and was declared a national monument in 1973. It is still furnished in period-style furniture and the majority of furniture and decorations that can be seen today belonged to the original owners.

According to property24, the average property price in East London for May 2019 was R 2 322 916. For the same time period, 43 225 available houses were listed on property24, along with 4 212 apartments.

What does a Roofer do?

It is a Roofer’s job to repair, replace, and install roofs connected to residential houses and commercial buildings. Since roofs come in all shapes, sizes and styles, Roofers work with a variety of materials such as metal, aluminium, wood, shingles, tiles, slate, and steel.

In addition, a Roofer can also be expected so scale the tops of a property to fix leaky surfaces, replace broken tiles, or seal roof areas to ensure they’re watertight.

Being a Roofer can be quite physically demanding job, as stamina to stand, climb, kneel for long time periods, and carefully walk on a roof in all sorts of weather is required. But the fact remains that the work a Roofer does is crucial to the construction industry, as Roofers ensure that buildings are structurally sound and safe for those within them.

A Roofer can work on a full- or part-time basis.

What are a Roofer’s day-to-day duties?

This all depends on the type of project they’re working on. However, general tasks can include:

1.  Performing roof pre-inspections

Before they start a job, a Roofer inspects a roof to determine the best method of repairing or replacing it. Their work area will also be inspected to ensure all required tools are present. Part of their evaluation will also include calculating the total amount of materials and labour required to complete a project.

2.  Measuring and cutting project materials

A Roofer must make sure that all his/her materials used are correctly trimmed to tightly fit along the edges of a roof. As they are responsible for altering materials as needed, Roofers must also make their materials fit around chimneys, vents, gutters, etc.

3.  Smoothing and levelling roof surfaces

A Roofer will smooth out rough spots and prepare a surface for new shingles or waterproofing before adding new layers. Some of the tools and materials that they use to level out surfaces include hammers, chisels, or other abrasive materials such as bricks, sand, and dirt. After the new shingles have been placed, the Roofer may glaze the top layer of their work and embed gravel to fill crevices.

4.  Installing roofing materials

The most vital part of any Roofer’s job is to construct a weatherproof roof by installing materials like shingles and asphalt. During this process, any areas of the roof that are damaged or rotting are replaced. To ensure a more weatherproof seal, insulation or vapour barriers may also be used. Roofers use caulk and mortar during installation to cover exposed nails or screw heads to help prevent leakage.

5.  Completing site set-up and clean-up

A Roofer’s job is not complete, as soon as the roof is perfect. When arriving on site, a Roofer and his/her crew will set up ladders, scaffolding, and other temporary structures to help them conduct their roof work in a safe way. And after the job is completed, the Roofer and his/her team are required to break down the site and make it as clean and neat as they first found it.

Why is it important to hire a professional Roofer?

1.  It could save you money

Putting a roof on correctly, or fixing one, involves a lot of different tools and materials. Buying all of these could cost thousands of rands, and since you don’t work in the industry or have suppliers, you won’t get a reduced rate as most Roofers do. And let’s not forget the money you’ll lose if your DIY roofing job turns out shoddy and you have to get a professional in to fix your mistakes.

2.  You get high-quality materials

If you were to DIY your new roof, you’d probably go for the cheapest materials available to cut costs. But the professionals have access to first-rate materials at reduced costs. That means your new roof will sport top-notch materials – if you use a professional Roofer!

3.  You get the work of an expert

It happens very often that home renovation projects don’t go as planned. And should you attempt a roofing project on your own, you might not know what to do once you encounter an unforeseen problem. But a seasoned professional Roofer is trained to know exactly what to do should any issue pop up. That allows you and your family peace of mind for the duration of the project.

4.  The job will be completed much faster

It’s not a guarantee that the professional Roofer you hire will be able to start the very next day. However, it is a promise that, due to their skills and training, they’ll deliver a high-quality job much sooner than even the most experienced DIYer.

5.  There’s no worry about anyone getting hurt

It’s a fact that a roof high above the ground is not the safest spot to work. By letting a professional take care of the job, the risk of injury is severely minimised, as Roofers are also trained on safety precautions. In addition, good Roofers carry insurance that protects you from liability should someone from their crew sustain an injury.

6.  You may be privy to a warranty

If you are in charge of a remodelling project, all mistakes are 100% on you. But many professional roofing companies offer warranties through their work. That is excellent news if your new roof begins leaking within a few months or if another issue arises. Just check your Roofer’s warranty policy before signing that contract!
