Joiners in Soweto

Soweto is the most well-known township in the City of Johannesburg. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships.

The origins of Soweto can be traced back to 1904 when Klipspruit, the oldest of a cluster of townships that make up the modern-day Soweto, was established. This was created in order to provide accommodation to the black labourers who worked in the mines and Johannesburg’s industries, away from the city centre. Soweto was officially created and named in the 1930s.

Within time, Soweto has become the most populous black urban residential area in South Africa. Today, it is seen as a place of friendship, vibrancy and contrasts among its numerous residents, who is estimated to make up about 40% of Johannesburg's citizens.

What is a Joiner?

Joiner is a professional whose job it is to build things by joining together pieces of wood, particularly lighter and more decorative work than that designed by a Carpenter. This can include furniture, staircases, cabinetry, interior and exterior doors, windows, tables, bookshelves, the "fittings" of a house or ship, etc.

In shipbuilding, a marine Joiner may work with materials other than wood like linoleum, fibreglass, hardware, and gaskets.

A Joiner may work in a workshop, as the formation of various joints is made easier by using non-portable, powered machinery, or on a job site.

How does a Joiner differ from a Carpenter?

Although these two professions can overlap in the industry, especially because both a Joiner and Carpenter learn about the basics of both trades while studying as apprentices, there are distinct differences between the two.

Unlike Joiners, Carpenters complete the majority of their work on-site via lighter tools and equipment. They are trained to expertly install and repair features of any size, such as door frames and roof trusses. A Carpenter could even be hired for timber-framed construction.

A Carpenter can also help out with repair and restoration work. For instance, should there be a need to revive an old wooden floor or restore fitted wooden features, a Carpenter rather than a Joiner will be hired, since they would be better suited in creating a replacement.

What to remember when looking for the right Joiner

Regardless of whether you want to build a staircase or renovate a kitchen, you need to put some thought into hiring the right kind of Joiner to head up that project. And the following tips are sure to help you acquire the ideal professional / company.

1.  Experience matters – a lot

Just like other professionals in the construction industry, you want to put your trust in the hands of a seasoned expert. For example, if you need commercial joinery services like office fit-outs, it is imperative to employ a Joiner with the right knowledge and experience. The same can be said for when you require commercial joinery services in your house – be sure that you obtain a professional with a few years’ experience to ensure optimum results for your project.

2.  Reputation is golden

It is no secret that one can spend a fortune on hiring a professional in the construction / design industry. Thus, you want to employ someone who will be worth the costs, which is why you must look for a company with a good reputation. That is the best way to ensure you have minimal to no problems when working with the professionals, as any project is always a business relationship between client and company / professional. Always ensure to check the relevant documentation like licenses and qualifications.

3.  Obtain recommendations

How will you know if that Joiner is going to be a good fit for your project if you don’t know what past work they’ve completed, or what others are saying about them? Find as many recommendations as you can, either from online sources or from friends / family members / colleagues who recently made use of joinery services. Never be content with just the recommendations the professional provides you with – find your own as well. Thanks to homify’s collection of professionals, finding a Joiner in your area is easier than ever before, whether it’s Soweto, Cape Town, or Durban. Simply select your town / city from the list at the very bottom of the ‘Joiners page, or type in your location in the ‘search’ bar. Our lists of professionals also include additional information on each expert including past projects, contact details, and customer reviews (where applicable).

4.  Keep the deadline in mind

A project that runs off schedule is sure to end up costing much more. That is why it is crucial to find a professional Joiner who is meticulous about sticking to deadlines. Make sure the start- and end dates of your project are referenced in the contract, which must be drawn up before the project starts and signed by you and the professional in charge. This will help ensure minimum distractions to your normal lifestyle and business activities. Should the Joiner you’re interviewing not be able to guarantee a set time frame for any reason, move on to the next candidate.
