Joiners in Benoni

Benoni began in 1881 with a piece of land in the area gradually growing into a little village. When gold was discovered in 1887, the Chimes Mine by Cornishmen was established, resulting in the village became known as “Little Cornwall” for a time.

Over the years, the village expanded quite rapidly, especially with thousands of trees being

planted in the new mining district (which was declared the township of Benoni) in 1906. Today, Benoni is anything but a quaint little village. It has grown into a diverse city with a modern area layout of 175.55 km². It features a much stronger suburban vibe than many of the other East Rand towns, which tend to be more industrialised. This is evidenced by the various tree-lined neighbourhoods which include well-known suburbs like Airfield, Fairleads, and Lakeside.

For April 2019, the average estimated value of a house in Benoni was R1 100 000 - for apartments, the price was lower at R700 000.

What work does a professional Joiner do?

A professional Joiner assembles prepared timber to build structure and ready-to-install fittings. This work involves cutting timber and timber joints to template size and shape. A Joiner may also repair existing fittings, work with plastic laminates, Perspex or metals, and carry out work on maintenance, major and minor construction work. A Joiner usually works in a workshop, fitting various items for future installation that will be implemented by Carpenters.

Depending on the type of project they’re working on, Joiners’ typical duties may include:

  • Making specific fittings or furniture, from staircases and dining room tables to kitchen cabinets
  • Constructing shelving units
  • Repairing and maintaining doors, door frames, windows etc.
  • Making timber frames
  • Cutting and shaping wood
  • Ensuring all their work, performed by them and/or their employees, is performed in accordance with the requirements of Health and Safety and other relevant legislations
  • Providing a service to clients and maintaining good customer service and relationships.

How does a Joiner differ from a Cabinet Maker?

A Cabinet Maker zooms in on the finer details of what can be created and built with wood. The making of cabinets involves detailed and more refined work and needs to be very precise which requires careful attention to detail.

Cabinet Makers, like Carpenters, can become involved with numerous projects like kitchen renovations, the building of bathroom vanities and bookcases, fixing entertainment units and cabinetry, etc. A lot of Cabinet Makers also do shop fittings.

Although the terms ‘cabinet making’ and ‘joinery’ are often used interchangeably, there is a difference. Joinery is very specialised and is the process of joining wood together. Items like bookcases, cabinets, doors, windows, and stairs can be undertaken by a Joiner. Joiners are usually restricted to working in a joinery workshop.

Most Cabinet Makers are also Joiners.

What are the advantages of hiring a professional Joiner?

1.  First-rate results

A professional Joiner brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table, meaning they are able to provide great results when it comes to home or commercial improvements. Thanks to in-depth training and working, their skills have developed throughout the years to help them get around any possible issues that may arise.

2.  No time-wasting

Certain projects can take up a lot of time, even for experienced Joiners. Thus, for ordinary DIYers, this time span will be even longer. Hiring a professional Joiner means you get the peace of mind of knowing that the job will be completed in the most efficient way possible to help save time.

3.  No hidden fees

Before jumping onto a DIY project, keep in mind that some works require specialist materials or equipment in order to be carried out successfully. A lot of these tools can be quite pricey to hire. With a professional Joiner onboard, you can be certain you are getting an expert who already owns all of the required equipment to complete the job.

4.  It could work out cheaper

Although it’s true that certain DIY jobs can help cut down on some costs here and there, this isn’t always the case. Take into consideration all of the materials and tools that are needed for an in-depth joinery project. And let’s not forget that if anything goes wrong, you may need extra costs to hire a professional just to come in and clean up the mess – which could have been prevented if that professional had just been employed right from the start.

5.  A clean space post-project

Depending on the type of joinery job required, you could be left with a huge mess afterwards. And if you are DIYing it, you can be certain that you will be responsible for cleaning up any debris and leftover materials. But hiring a professional Joiner means hiring a seasoned expert who will clean up their own mess once the work is finished.
