Electricians in Boksburg

Boksburg lies on the East Rand of South Africa’s Gauteng province. Similar to various other places in the country, the city became known after gold was discovered in 1887. Once the gold rush started, Boksburg expanded with more residential properties and industrial buildings, including the Post Office and the Mining Commissioner’s office (both built in 1887).

Boksburg’s Victorian heritage can still be appreciated today, thanks to the variety of Victorian / Traditional structure scattered about the city. One of the oldest is the Old Government Building on Church Street. Designed by Sytze Wierda, the foundation stone of this heritage structure was laid in 1890. For a few years thereafter, this age-old building was used by numerous community organisations until it was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation in early 1963.

What do electricians do?

An electrician is responsible for installing and maintaining the electrical / power systems of houses, businesses, and factories. The wiring and control equipment of these buildings through which the electricity flows is installed by electricians, whose job is also to maintain them.

Generally, an electrician starts his work by reading blueprints which allocate the placement of circuits, outlets, load centres, panel boards, and other necessary equipment in a structure. Once the electrician has determined where all the wires and components will go, they install and connect the wires to circuit breakers, transformers, outlets, etc.

Electricians make use of a variety of tools, depending on the task at hand. These include hand tools (like conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, knives, hacksaws, etc.) and power tools (such as drills and saws). In order to test connections and ensure everything is in safe working order, electricians use ammeters, ohmmeters, voltmeters, harmonics testers, and other equipment.

The work of an electrician may be quite exhausting at times and can include bending conduit, lifting heavy objects, and standing, stooping, and kneeling for long periods of time. Since the work of an electrician is one of the most dangerous, these professionals need to follow strict safety procedures not only to avoid risk injury from electrical shocks, but also from falls and cuts.

Are there different kinds of electricians?

Just like other professionals in the construction industry specialising in different areas (i.e. architects preferring to work on residential projects as opposed to industrial ones), so too are there different kinds of electricians.

Residential electricians

These professionals install, maintain, and upgrade the electrical equipment in houses and apartments. They may also work on outdoor lighting installations for gardens and landscaping. The training for this combines formal classroom instructions with an apprenticeship that involves a certain amount of work (generally four years) under the supervision of experienced electricians.

Commercial electricians

These electricians work on construction sites, in commercial buildings, and on mechanical electrical systems. Most of them perform installation work for water heaters, commercial security systems, etc. Commercial electricians also complete system upgrades and troubleshoot systems to single out any issues caused by faulty wiring.

Journeymen electricians

Journeymen electricians focus on mechanical connections, lighting installation, power supplies, security systems and communications in both residential- and commercial buildings. They may also work on overhead lines. A lot of these professionals work in construction, although some may work for utility companies or manufacturing plants.

Master electricians

These are highly skilled electricians who generally work in a supervisory role or may even own their own contracting businesses. Apart from the usual knowledge on installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems, a master electrician must also possess managerial skills. These kinds of electricians typically supervise a staff of labourers, apprentices and journeyman electricians on commercial- and residential jobs.

How to choose the right electrician for the job

With homify’s extensive collections of professionals, you are already closer to the perfect electrician for your project. But keep in mind that word of mouth is also a good reference, to speak to family and friends to find out which professionals they recently made use of.

Although references are important, this doesn’t have to rule out electricians who are new to the profession. An electrician can still be perfectly competent and professional without having much experience. But just know that even a newly trained one should still be able to provide references from his/her training provider.

Once you’ve gotten hold of a few electricians’ contact details, narrow your list down to three or four and request full quotes from them. This is to inform you about the total cost of the project. Also ensure they specify whether there are call-out charges or hourly rates, which materials are included, etc.

Never let the quote’s final price be your determining factor. Ask the electrician whether they guarantee their work and if they correct any work that doesn’t meet applicable standards. Here below are some more questions to ask an electrician before hiring him/her:

  • Find out if the electrician works as an independent professional or as part of a national company or contractor. The latter can sometimes be pricier, but it ensures you have the added peace of mind that comes from knowing the parent company has vetted the electrician and trusts him/her to work under their name.
  • Check if the professional holds a valid license for the jurisdiction in which he/she will work, and that they are registered.
  • Make sure the electrician has public liability insurance before they start working on an electrical job on your property.
