We were approached by Senior Architect Darryn Botha from FWJK to assist with the design and supply of awnings for the retail area of the new Illovo Point high rise development in Sandton.
Because the existing structures available from our supplier could not cope with the extraordinary dimensions, it was necessary to design the project from scratch. Powder coated steel was used, instead of aluminium as it provided better structural integrity.
The pillars of the awnings had to be mounted on steel pins, to create a 'floating effect', and we had to design a unique storm-water drainage system to cope with the heavy thunderstorms that often hit the highveld in summertime.
There is also the possibility of adding vertical blinds after completion, which will further assist in keeping the summer sun at bay.
