Quogue Weekend House, Quogue, NY, BILLINKOFF ARCHITECTURE PLLC BILLINKOFF ARCHITECTURE PLLC Nursery/kid’s room

There was nothing redeeming about this 1980’s house aside from its great location close to the beach and bountiful floor area. Built as part of a spec development, the house was a carbon copy of others on the street, several of which had been transformed into Italian villas or American McMansions. We, however, wanted to give new life to the house without resorting to disguise. We wanted to capitalize on its intrinsic good qualities and improve on the poor ones.

Similar to many of our other projects, we opened up the interior spaces to achieve a more relaxed flow appropriate to the needs of a young family. We removed all the partitions in the public area of the house. We relocated the kitchen to straddle one side of the “great room.” We designed an eight foot wide sliding door to close off an adjacent TV room. To further increase openness, we removed drop ceilings to expose the interior pitch of the roof. The result: a ceiling of “origami” folds and bends highlighted by sunlight as it shifts through the day. The finishes were selected with economy and ease of maintenance in mind. Except in the bedrooms where there is carpet, all floors are the same 12” x 24” grey porcelain tile. Millwork is painted. Countertops are Corian. A divider clad in reclaimed wood wraps the exterior of the TV room and one low side of the kitchen island. The walls are painted our favorite white, Benjamin-Moore “White Heron.” The exterior and all trim (for which photos are still to come) was painted charcoal. The three-car garage has an oversized impact on the front of the house. To improve its appearance and provide natural light to the owner’s handyman workshop inside, we replaced the original colonial garage doors with frosted glass and aluminum. To further improve the home’s curb appeal we removed the arched windows, the arch over the front door and its surrounding colonial columns. We replaced the handrail with a stainless cable rail. New windows with black frames and clear finish galvanized gutters and leaders were also added. The interiors done in collaboration with Judy Melinger Design are simple, economical, and appropriate for a casual weekend lifestyle. A few pieces including the dining room table were custom designed.
