The brief from the client was a Farmhouse concept as both of them grew up in the Freestate Province of ZAR and they would wish to recapture their childhood nostalgia growing up on a farm. Of course eveyrthing has progressed since then and they opted for a Modern Farmhouse design concept to embrace the farmhouse but simultaneously incorporating modern lifestyle into the house.

A one of a kind property on which the house had to be designed on, had a perfect setting for the modern farmhouse concept and is situated in the Nature Reserve Area of the Silverlakes Golf Estate complete with free roaming small game in the area. An additional major feature of the property is that it lies adjacent to the dam in the nature reserve and the property is bordered by the dam on the north and east sides with magnificent views over the dam. With these natural attributes of the property the house was designed to embrace these aspects with a flow between nature and the structure.

The overall design layout is a series of vernacular rectangular sheds linked together as per the old farmhouse concept, complete with pitched steel roofs, stone cladding and metal water tanks which all is in true farmhouse character. To this we added we added a vast amount of steel I-beams, channel sections and purpose laser cut steel sections as well as cantilevering and floating concrete elements. Our favorite two major design elements are the 3 storey high concrete silos structures which lies on the main entrance axis of the house and the first silo acts as the Entrance Hall and the second silo encase the Spiral Main Staircase to first floor level. Both the silos have sloped glass roof structures and this create a wash of light and patterns down the tubular walls which changes constantly during the day, which differs every day of the year as well. We also used vast amounts of glass to embrace the vistas over the dam and to connect the nature to the house. All of these last design elements created the mix for a Modern Farmhouse.

Lloyd Cook Interiors was responsible for the interior design and the furniture of the project which truly compliment and embrace the architectural style of the house. The construction of the project was finally completed by Jaco Botes Project Management.
