The most easy way to upgrade a kitchen is to remove closed cabinets and replace them with open shelves. These could be in the form of floating shelves one above the other of the same size and with similar amount of space between each shelve or a mix of small and large shelves suited to specific needs. Besides being easy to manage and clean, open shelves make it fairly easy to find essentials when needed instead of hunting through cabinets. Here are some examples of wall mounted open shelves in kitchens some of which are also detachable and can be fitted into any kitchen to suit changing demands of storage.

1. Open Scandinavian style

In this nearly all white Scandinavian style kitchen the wooden cubby style open shelf located just below white cabinets is of the idea size and depth to store emergency essentials like tissues, condiments, spices, tasting ladles and small bowls.

2. Cabinet style built in shelves

In several kitchens open shelves surround a cooking range and are evenly spaced so that the entire wall looks balanced. But depending on your storage requirements open shelves can be placed right opposite the cooking area like here which serves as a barrier between kitchen and other parts of the house. The open shelves are built into the wall and are of mixed sizes making it easy to store a wide variety of kitchen essentials.

3. Rectangular open shelves

In a built-in kitchen like this where nearly all the gadgets are neatly arranged in their respective slots it is important to have custom designed storage to maintain symmetry.

4. Corner style open shelves

Open shelves running along the entire length of the kitchen wall is easy to reach out for items and also to put them back let us consider something different too. Here are open shelves at the right angle that make effective use of corner spaces. As corners are usually left unused or applied to hang knives, scissors or other implements why not make shelves to store lesser used kitchen gadgets like hand blenders, vegetable carvers or small cutlery and bowls.

5. Alcove style shelf

This open plan kitchen located at one corner of a spacious layout is designed entirely from metal and has end to end copper cabinets that give it a strong personality. While every item is neatly ensconced in its respective niche within the cabinets there is an open alcove style shelf at its heart that lightens up the somber atmosphere of this modern kitchen.

6. Short cubby style

In a small kitchen storage space is also limited and kitchen planners generally resort to sliding doors or upward flipping cabinet doors to save space. Here the cubby style shelve has been given added dimension by spreading it all along the bottom section of cabinet to create reachable storage above the sink.

7. Floating shelves along the wall

For a neat flawless kitchen resort to an open kitchen shelf plan like this where floating shelves of various sizes maintain the minimalist look.
